Just Faith

JustFaith is an introduction to and an experience of Catholic teaching on social justice. The JustFaith program encourages its participants to think about and discuss issues of social justice in the context of our faith. It consists of reading about, listening to speakers, watching videos of, discussing, and experiencing conditions that cry out for action by people of faith.

One of the first books in the program, The Challenge and Spirituality of Catholic Social Justice, by Marvin L. Krier Mich, summarizes the seven themes of social justice:

  1. Life and dignity of the human person
  2. Call to family, community, and participation
  3. Human rights and responsibilities
  4. Option for the poor and vulnerable
  5. The dignity of work and the rights of workers
  6. Solidarity
  7. Care for God’s creation
JustFaith meets from September through May, during which it presents each of these seven themes, explains its relationship to our current society, and describes the opportunity within the JustFaith program to explore what we can do not only to identify the challenges before us, but to choose how to make a difference. Bible Study
This fall, two different courses will run concurrently: Bible Basics and Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians.

Bible Basics answers questions like why we have four gospels, whether David or Moses came first, and what is the difference between a Philistine and a Pharisee. This seven-week course is meant for those who have little experience of sacred Scripture outside of Mass, but want to delve more deeply into it. Sessions are organized around important figures from the Bible, including Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, Jesus and Paul. Students will read Bible passages pertaining to each person and explore how their stories fit together into the great chronicle we call salvation history.

Bible Basics will meet on seven consecutive Tuesday evenings, beginning Sept. 23, from 7pm - 8:30pm. For further information, email Deacon Joe Kupin (jkupin@stpaulsofprinceton.org).

The First Letter to the Corinthians has portions that are familiar to most everyone (the ode to love that starts "Love is patient, love is kind,..." is frequently read at weddings), but real understanding of the entire message requires that the entire letter be read as a whole.

This nine-week course begins on Wed., Sept. 24 and concludes before Thanksgiving. Two groups will meet each Wednesday, one at 10am and the other at 7:30pm, each session lasting an hour and a half. (The same material is covered at both sessions, so you may feel free to alternate.) Course materials cost $13. Having a Bible of your own is also helpful.
